Welcome Back! A Message for the New YearDear NNCS Family,
It is a clear, blue afternoon close to the turn of the year. As I follow a bounding puppy through the snowy back field, a loud cacophony slices the still air. A great gathering of geese passes overhead, Vs within Vs, constantly reforming. They have the puppy's complete attention. Why the V and all that loud honking? As with nature, there is purpose to their behavior. First, the formation conserves energy; each bird flying slightly above the one in front of him creates loft for those who follow. The strongest birds take turns in the lead to ease the way of those that follow. Those who leave the group find the journey more difficult. Flying a bit to the side of a traveling companion allows for easier visibility and communication, forming the characteristic V. Perhaps what nature taught the geese can inform us in the year ahead. The journey is easier if we don't travel alone. Constant communication helps us move toward a common destination. With this in mind, I urge you to participate in the upcoming Community Forums to be held at the school on January 29 and February 27. Let us keep talking and working toward a common purpose. Watch the newspapers and look for local fliers for more information. Back in the field, I have to wonder what all that loud goosely conversation is about. Listening carefully, I'm sure I hear "Thanks, I'll take the lead now"..."Hey, anyone know a good place for lunch?"..."So, this your first migration?"..."Are we there yet?"..."Do these feathers make me look fat?"..."Because I'm the Mother, that's why!"... Losing interest, the puppy frolics down the field and I follow. My best wishes to you for a happy 2013. Bess |
